Welcome to the memorial page for

William H. "Herb" Karsnak

June 26, 1929 ~ February 21, 2015 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Youngstown, WILLIAM H. ‘HERB’ KARSNAK
William “Herb” H. Karsnak, 85, passed away of Parkinson’s disease on February 21, 2015 at Park Vista Retirement Community.
Born on June 26, 1929, he was a 1947 graduate of Campbell Memorial. A veteran of the Korean Conflict era and peacetime, Herb served in the U.S. Navy from July 1947 - 52, aboard the U.S.S. Albemarle.  He was a member of the Heritage Presbyterian Church.
Herb worked with his father operating Karsnak’s Market at Shirley Rd., Lansingville, and Robinson Rd., Campbell locations.  He owned Herb’s Smoke House in Lincoln Knolls and was well known for his smoked meats. His kolbasy and beef jerky were shipped across the entire United States to folks who moved away but could find no match for it.  Holidays were a very busy time for him and often you could find his wife Helen working alongside him in the shop.
Herb married the former Helen Stepetich on July 4, 1969 and they resided on Oak St. Extension.  She passed away on July 11, 1998.  They liked visiting casinos and keeping track of which one had better luck.  He enjoyed bowling and golf.  Herb was inventive, mechanical and an organizer; everything had its place, often hung or moored with a practical invention he created.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna (Kozusko) Karsnak, and Anna (Hudock) Gillen; and a brother Paul Gappen.
He leaves brothers George Karsnak of Canfield, John Karsnak and sisters Martha Rusky, Mary Ann Cramer, and Georgiann Karsnak all of Youngstown, and Carol (Wally) Disler of Florida.
He also leaves Helen’s daughter Deborah Fultz and her children Shiloh McFarland, Lucan and Joshua Christy.
In keeping with Herb’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or service.  Special thanks to Senior Independence Hospice and to the staff at Park Vista for their compassionate care.
Herb was known as a nice guy to all who knew him and he will be missed.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kirila Funeral Home, Struthers.

There are no calling hours or services planned for Herb
