Joyce Ornelas

Joyce P. Ornelas, 84, of Struthers, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Monday, June 2nd, 2025.

Born on September 14th, 1940, Youngstown, Ohio, Joyce was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen Furgan (Liptak). Joyce was a lifelong resident of the area.

Joyce cherished her family whether baking her kolachi rolls for Christmas, Sunday pasta dinners, or knitting blankets for all to enjoy. She was a Cosmetologist and spent several years as a stylist at Hair Styling Concepts, her sister Mitzi Norris’ salon. She also worked at Brentwood Originals as well as the old Purple Cow and 20th Century restaurants. Joyce was a devout Catholic and member of St. John the Baptist (Christ the Good Shepard) Church in Campbell.

On October 31st, 1959, Joyce married the love of her life Dave Ornelas Sr. and shared 57 years of their life together until his passing in 2017. All who knew them understood that Dave affectionately referred to Joyce as “The Chief”.  Together they shared 42 years at their home in Coitsville, Ohio lovingly raising their family and hosting summer family picnics. When not at home they could be found at their favorite casino or traveling with their siblings roaming the beaches of Florida in search of shark teeth. She also enjoyed bowling and golfing with family and friends.

Joyce is survived by her Sister Mitzi (Dan) Norris of Avon Park, Florida, son David (Tracie) of Huntsville, Alabama, daughter and devoted caregiver Laura Mate of Struthers, Ohio, daughter, Lisa Ornelas of Struthers, Ohio, as well as 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also Aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Joyce is preceded in death and reunited with her devoted husband Dave Ornelas Sr., parents, Michael and Helen Furgan (Liptak), Sister Roberta Seigerstrom, Brother Robert Furgan (Maria), a niece, Ursula Hegarty, and Father/Mother in-law Ascension (Katherine) Ornelas.

With respect to Joyce’s wishes there will be no calling hours. A Mass to celebrate Joyce’s life will be open to all at St. John the Baptist (Christ the Good Shepard), Campbell, Ohio on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 10:00 am. Joyce and Dave will be buried together in love at St John’s Cemetery, Coitsville, Ohio.
