John Granchie Obituary

Struthers - John Joseph Granchie, age 83, passed away on August 27, 2024. John was born in Youngstown, Ohio, On March 17, 1941, the son of John Frank and Eleanor Wagner Granchie. He was a 1959 graduate of Struthers High School.

John served in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves from 1960 to 1989 and retired with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He was stationed in Oklahoma where he met and married his wife Karen in 1964. He was also stationed in Mississippi and Germany and traveled to many countries. He originally trained for missile mechanics and later transferred to communications. John was proud of his service and was a member of the American Legion.

John worked in construction, and for the Army Corp of Engineers where he won many awards. He had a talent for working with his hands and always stayed busy. Not only did John build and repair homes to provide a living for his family, he also enjoyed construction as a hobby. He created gadgets for his children such as stilts and sandboxes and household furniture, such as a sewing machine cabinet, desk, bookcases and stained glass artwork. He also loved landscaping his yard and always had one of the prettiest yards in the neighborhood.

John was a great parent and participated in his childrens’ activities, which included soccer, t-ball, church youth group and band. He loved to water ski and snow ski. He was an active member of his church and participated wherever he was needed.

In 2003 he moved back to Struthers to be near his extended family. John loved to bowl and golf with his brother and was a ranger at Bedford Trails for many years. He loved to host family gatherings and dine with his loved ones.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Karen of Struthers; daughter Cindy (Mark) Fain of Norman, OK; brother, Robert (Christine) Granchie of Struthers; brother-in-law Emil Bobby of Struthers; granddaughter Mariah (Jet) Black of Harrah, OK; grandson,  Aaron Hamilton of Harrah, OK; one great-granddaughter Levicy and may other relatives.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brother Charles, sister Ann Bobby and his son John William Granchie.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation for the loving care that John received from the nurses and aids at Masternick Memorial Health Care Center and Akeso Home Hospice.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, from 11:00am - 12:00pm at the Kirila Funeral Home, 258 Poland Ave., Struthers, Ohio. A funeral service will follow at 12pm.
