John D. Medvec, Sr.

Struthers, John D. Medvec Sr., age 70, passed away at Hospice House after a brief illness on August 3, 2017, with family at his side. John was born August 18, 1946 to Martin and Virginia (Anderson) Medvec, the 2nd of 4 boys. He was a lifelong Struthers resident. John was a Struthers High School graduate, Class of 1965. He served in the US Navy - 1965-1967, aboard the USS Marias, as a Seaman E3, out of Norfolk, VA and Naples, Italy. After his service, he worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube/J&L Steel in production control. He then became a driver sales associate for both Pesce Baking and Intercontinental Baking (Wonder Bread, and Hostess Cake) until his retirement in 2008.

John is survived by his wife, the former Diane Klovis, who he married July 11, 1970, and celebrated 47 years together. He is also survived by his three children, John Jr (Teresa), of Struthers, Dan (Sarah), of Lowellville, and Stacey (Carl Newyear), of Macedonia, and his grandchildren, John III, Jared, BJ, Gianna, Olivia, Patrick, and Madeline.

John is also survived by three brothers; Martin Jr (Rose), of Tucson, AZ, Kenneth (Jane), of Struthers, and Michael (Christina), of Poland, and 11 nieces and nephews.

John was an active member of the Struthers Baseball League, where he served as coach and manager from 1980-1989, then was elected and served many terms as either 1st or 2nd Vice President until 2012. Since then he had been an active league trustee, serving the league with general park, field and concession stand preparation and maintenance.

He had been active in bowling. He was a league bowler in the 70s and 80s. He became a coach under the American Bowling Congress (ABC) and was an assistant coach at the Bowladrome in the 1980s. Returned to the lanes in 2015 to be the Saturday morning youth bowling director for Holiday Bowl.

John was a past President of the Struthers Band Booster. He was an active member from 1984-2000, where beside president, he served as historian, and was a member of the Pit Crew, band truck driver, chaperone, and concession worker during varsity and tournament basketball, and the Aut Mori Circus at the Struthers Fieldhouse.

John was an active member of Christ our Savior Parish, where he served multiple terms as a parish councilman, including a term as council president. He was active in the Muscle Club, and Pirohy Making, and Mass usher and he had represented COS in the community at the "Taste of the Valley" event hosted by area church community.

John was the Chairman/Organizer for the Struthers 4th of July Parade. He started when parade was a function of the Struthers Baseball League in the 1980’s. And has been its coordinator through the sponsorships of the Struthers Business Association, and the Struthers Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence. He was selected as the parade Marshall in 2016 for his years of dedication to the parade and community.

This past June, John was honored by the Struthers Athletic Boosters with their "Outstanding Contributor Award", for his years of giving and service to the people, children and athletes of the Struthers community.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Kirila Funeral Home, Inc. 258 Poland Avenue in Struthers. On Wednesday, a procession will leave the funeral home at 10:00 am for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at Christ our Savior Parish, Holy Trinity Church celebrated by Fr. Martin Celuch. Burial will take place in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice House in Johns name.

The Family would like to extend their heart-felt appreciation to the Mercy Health Boardman ICU, Vista Care Center Boardman, and Hospice House staffs for their incredible care of John during this trying time.
