POLAND – Carmen “Barney” Sciortino, 88, formerly of Struthers, passed away on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Poland.
Carmen was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Youngstown, son of the late Joseph and Jenny (Sarno) Sciortino.
Barney served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and, with the U.S. Army in Korea. He was lifetime member of VFW Post 7538 in Struthers, an avid golfer (with a hole-in-one!), bowling enthusiast, and enjoyed lake fishing with his wife, Marietta and children. Barney was also a great singer and loved performing at the Lowellville Minstrel Show. He was a member of St. Nicolas R.C. Church in Struthers. He retired from the Struthers Wastewater Treatment Plant and was also an expert union carpenter and cabinetmaker.
He is survived by his children, Briget Shields and husband Douglas, Jennifer Neopolitan and husband Carmen, Joseph Sciortino, and David Sciortino and wife Karen; his sister, Rita Minicucci; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Barney was preceded in death by his wife, Marietta (DeLucia) Sciortino, whom he married on April 28, 1951, she died Oct. 5, 1994; his sisters, Mary Jane Boyko, Vivian Shirilla; and a brother, Vincent Sciortino.
Friends will be received on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kirila Funeral Home Inc., 258 Poland Ave. Struthers, OH 44471.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Christ Our Savior Parish, St. Nicholas Church in Struthers. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for church.
Burial will take place at St. John Cemetery.
